Granary presents
IMPROVISATION MASTER-CLASS
GRANARY STUDIO 16 & 17 JULY 10am - 5PM
Having honed improv skills enables an actor to be more reactive, interactive, and totally in-the-moment at auditions and in performance. Improv can be used to develop original material and characters as well as are rehearsal tool to explore written text. In this master-class,performers will work through two different but related approaches.
Andy Crook: Working with the body in space, performers will explore how they can find true play and means of self-expression. Through simple exercises and physical actions they can find a true connection with the material they create. Performers will explore and release the different dynamics of the body order to create vibrant work using rhythm, physical musicality and each other. Performers will discover how they can extend their physical impulses to inhabit an exiting world of new possibilities.
John Dawson: Performers will explore various improv processes using collaborative games and exercises to develop personal intuitive skills, mental/emotional agility and heightened communication abilities. The elements of narrative; plot, character, conflict and resolution are emphasized along with the automatic acceptance of ‘offers’ to advance and develop scenic moments.
By melding these approaches, actors will learn to instantly create engaging, truthful and highly reactive characters in well-constructed scenic stories.
COST: 95.00 euro (35.00 euro deposit is required to enroll)

BLOOD+BANDAGE WORKSHOPS
Having discussed the various ideas raised at the recent BLOOD+BANDAGE meetings we have decided to take the initiative of mounting 8 three-day workshops beginning in February.
Meridian and the Granary are contributing €3,000 to get the first four moving with €750 being allocated as a maximum amount for each workshop. Graffiti and the Granary will host the workshops, which will begin in late February.
Meridian will mount and pay for another workshop independent of the core fund and in order to complete the 8 workshops, we would like to invite funded colleagues to contribute what they can to facilitate the full workshop programme.
Ideas are the other vital resource and we would urge anyone who has one to send in a very brief proposal so that we can see what can be done. Other aspects of BLOOD+BANDAGE are obviously still up for discussion but this is an effort to move things along in a way we think everyone wants.
Ideas don't have to be fully-formed; fragments are fruitful, so take that half-formed notion and let it see the light of day.

Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich was born into Russia under the last Tsar and grew up into the emerging Soviet state. When his opera; "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" drew the wrath of Stalin, he came close to annihilation and was saved only by dint of his international reputation. He survived to live a life where he had to constantly mediate between the needs of his own personal aesthetic and the controlling impositions of the Communist State where the cultural needs of "the people" were paramount. He still managed to be hugely prolific and died in the seventies leaving an immense and varied body of work behind him.

Findhorn Foundation - Forres, Scotland
Sacred Theatre is an act of service as old as humankind. It has found form and expression in every culture on our planet at one time or another. Gateway’s Artistic Director - internationally recognized performer, director, choreographer Sandra Lee Hughes - returns to the Findhorn Foundation - www.findhorn.org - in Scotland to join international workshop facilitator and Findhorn Foundation faculty member Franco Santoro to co-focalize a week-long Sacred Theatre workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the uses of mime, dance, mask, puppetry, text, chant, song, and instrumental music as elements of dramatic expression as they journey through image, movement, sound and emotion to the core of who they are as individuals living in community The workshop process culminates at Findhorn’s Universal Hall with the sharing of an original Sacred Theatre Event created by participants.
