Myrtlehill Terrace is set in Cork in the year 1911.
It follows the interwoven stories of the different residents of the Terrace, some light-hearted and funny, while others are more poignant and thought provoking. All of the characters in the play are based off real people recorded in the 1911 census, all of whom lived in Myrtlehill Terrace.. So often these types of characters are overlooked and overshadowed, particularly in this period of Irish history. The servants – the ticket collectors – the old ladies – all of them have their own lives, their own motivations, their stories to share.
The themes of the play are also highly relevant for a modern audience; throughout the play we encounter questions like the position of women in both the family and society at large, sexuality, division on the grounds of class and religion.
