Final Year Students of Drama & Theatre Studies at UCC

FOREGROUNDS 2016 showcases the theatre-making talents of final year single honours students in Drama & Theatre Studies at UCC.

A performance in two acts, FOREGROUNDS 2016 presents 21st Century adaptations of renowned short story ‘A Hunger Artist’ by Franz Kafka and the beloved Carlo Collodi book ‘The Adventures of Pinocchio’.

Each piece was selected for adaptation based on the relevance of its timeless thematic quality and of how such themes are mirrored in contemporary culture and society today.

FOREGROUNDS 2016 seeks to interrogate issues of identity, truth, art and its relevance in contemporary society.

Act 1 : A Hunger Artist

A stylised look into Franz Kafka’s A Hunger Artist – This ensemble re-imagines the eponymous character’s fall from grace into a freak show. We follow Ludwig as he struggles to maintain relevance in the face of overwhelming public apathy and ask the questions ‘What is true art?’ ‘What is fake and what is real? Is one better than the other?’ and ‘How far are you willing to go for your art?’

Act 2: The Laughing Wood

In this new adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s The Adventures of Pinocchio, this ensemble hopes to present a fresh approach to a story that people are seemingly familiar with, but that, undeservedly, does not get as much attention in its original as its adaptation by a certain Walt Disney. These blurred lines between a story and the re-telling of the story draw the picture that is The Laughing Wood, where you might have to decide for yourself what is a lie and what is the truth.
