A showcase of four new plays-in-progress
BLOOD+BANDAGE, the Cork centre for theatrical research and
development is supporting the development of eight new pieces
in the city in 2009. Through workshops, readings and dramaturgical
support it offers ongoing help to experimental new projects of all
kinds. Four pieces which have been developed through this process
are being featured in our October showcase of new work which runs
each evening in the Granary from October 9th to 17th.
'the mayor'
by Johnny Hanrahan
9th & 10th Oct, 8pm nightly
The Mayor is a play that looks and feels like a gig. Based on The Mayor
of Casterbridge, it’s set in the very glamorous world of boybands,
ruthless managers and reality TV and tells the same basic story of
addiction and self-destructive folly as Hardy’s original. A theatre
band are the only performers and through a range of songs, videos,
choral sequences, monologues, conventional scenes and hybrids of
all of these they whip up a hard-hitting satire of co-ordinated suits,
remarkable haircuts and celebrity in general, Irish-style.
'i am & will not be'
by Charlie Murphy
12th & 13th Oct, 8pm nightly
There once was a little girl with long black hair, who barely grew up
and barely had breasts but knew how to use them. And although she
was tired of the sadness she was happy she loved...There once was a
girl who wanted beddy bye’s and b’b’b’beepy boozies, snuggles and
snoozies. There once was a girl who took her heavy life lightly. And
swallowed too much. With Lola Kingerlee & Jill Harding
'make yourself comfortable'
by Sandra Minchin
14th & 15th Oct, 8pm nightly
Starring Miss Lily Lake the Jewish Heiress who was captured by the
Germans but sang her way to freedom. Will entertain you for two
nights only. ....her voice is like manuka honey and she could seduce
a man with a telephone call........... (Rolling Stone Magazine). Sandra
Ann Minchin’s debut is a politically charged performance full of thorny
emotional dilemmas- from the opening minutes there’s a palpable
feeling of menace and unease- but it is utterly gripping. Beautifully
pitched and unsentimental in execution. ( Art Times)
Audience are asked to come dressed in black.
Over 18s and contains nudity.
'brilliant'
by David Farrell
16th & 17th Oct, 8pm nightly
Brilliant is a music-play, the story of Danny who grew up a working-
class hero, who formed a very successful band, who toured the world,
recorded top ten singles, was hyped and lauded in the music press and
blew it all on heroin, crack and booze. “Now I’m grown up and its all
dark and weird and little Danny is asking me for a dig out and I keep
telling him to hang on a sec I’m really having a hard time minding big
Danny so hang on there little Danny just wait there another twenty
years on your own in the Dark in your pyjamas and your curly hair and
alone and waiting for fucking someone to give me a hug in the dark.”
